PROFILE

Architect and Distinguished Professor at the University of Tokyo. Being impressed by the Yoyogi National Gymnasium designed by Kenzo Tange during the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964, he dreamt of becoming an architect at his young age. In his university days, he learnt under Hiroshi Hara and Yoshichika Uchida. When being at graduate school, he successfully crossed the Sahara desert in Africa. This experience got him to recognize the beauty and strength of the tribes in the desert. After a Visiting Fellow at Colombia University, he established "Kengo Kuma and Associates" in 1990. He has designed architecture in over 30 countries around the world and has received a lot of awards in Japan and abroad to date. He proposes human-scaled gentle and soft designs with the aim of creating architecture that blend seamlessly into the nature and culture of the land. He is, additionally, now pursuing how architectures should be in the post-industrialized society by constantly seeking new materials as a substitute for concrete and steel.

  • INTERVIEW/ KENGO KUMA

Enjoying a high quality of life among trees and nature will make you feel truly at "Home".

The design of Prostyle Sapporo Miyanomori was created by the world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, who gained fame for his work on the Tokyo Olympic Main Stadium.

Kengo Kuma is known for his exploration of a futuristic and innovative approach to incorporating cutting-edge wooden designs into architecture. He conducts thorough investigations, including the study of the area and culture, to ensure that his buildings seamlessly blend with the local environment.

In recent years, Kengo Kuma has been dedicated to creating architecture that elicits a sense of realism, with a particular emphasis on the interplay of shadows created by the buildings.

His contributions to architectural culture have earned him numerous prestigious awards worldwide. In 2009, he received the Arts and Culture Medal from the French government, and in 2019, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Japanese government, solidifying his fame as an architect.

While Kengo Kuma has worked on various architectural projects in Hokkaido, Prostyle Sapporo Miyanomori marks his first opportunity to handle a residential project in the region. We had the chance to learn about the background of the design for Prostyle Sapporo Miyanomori and the “premium lifestyle” that offers in the Miyanomori area of Sapporo’s Chuo Ward.
